The word "Bethel" is
from Genesis 28:19
and means "a sacred
area or sanctuary."
Some of the area's
first pioneers  were
religious settlers who
brought their faiths to
the area.  They
considered this area
special enough to
name a Bethel
Township in both Clark
 and Miami Counties,
touching one another.

Large population centers in the unincorporated area of
Bethel Township are:
  • The village of Medway, first settled by Mennonites
from Pennsylvania in the 1840's,  retains a small
town ambiance.  A small park in the center of town
provides access to the Wenrick Wetlands, 249
acres of woods, trails, and wet terrain suitable for
    the study of wildlife.

  • Crystal Lakes, where development began in the
early 1900's as a summer retreat, is now a year-
round community with a property owners'
association and member access to its four private
    lakes.

  • Park Layne, a major subdivision where
development began in the 1950's, is the largest
population center of the township.  Raynor Park is
located in the heart of Park Layne, with 17 acres
containing four soccer fields, a football field, a
shelter house, basketball hoops, and abundant
playground equipment newly installed over the past
    several years.
